What are the TouchMath Instructional Strategies, and how do I access them?

TouchMath uses systematic and explicit instruction to support students as they work to master concepts. This approach involves:

  • Modeling and explicit explanations of new knowledge during direct instruction
  • Providing varied and accessible opportunities for students to respond
  • Incorporating guided and independent practice within instruction

In guided practice, students and teachers work problems together, with students gradually taking on more responsibility.

In independent practice, students work individually or in small groups to hone newly learned skills.

Build It, Draw It, Write It Model (BIDIWI)

The Build It, Draw It, Write It model (BIDIWI) utilizes a CRA approach to helping students understand complex concepts. This strategy supports students who struggle with math or learning a new concept.

  • Build It: Students use manipulatives they are comfortable with, including counters, base-ten blocks, or other manipulatives.
  • Draw It: Students draw and interpret mathematical models to help with their understanding.
  • Write It: Students use numbers, symbols, or words to describe problems and solutions.

Modified Frayer Chart

The modified Frayer Chart is a graphic organizer that helps students determine or clarify mathematical terms and concepts. TouchMath uses this strategy to focus on conceptual understanding and learning of mathematical vocabulary and procedural fluency or computation.

  • Mathematical Term or Concept: The mathematical term or concept is written in the middle
  • Definition: The student writes a definition of the term or concept in the top left section
  • Facts/Characteristics: The student draws an image or representation of the term or concept in the top right section
  • Examples: The student shows examples of the term or concept in the bottom left section
  • Non Examples: The student shows situations not showing the term or concept in the bottom right section

Supporting all Students

Successful use of these strategies relies on consistent teacher modeling, guided support, and gradually supporting students as they work independently.

Additional information about these instructional strategies is included in the Teacher's Guide for each unit.
