Where can I find information about the Place Value Mats?
Place Value Mats are an instructional resource used throughout the TouchMath program.
When?
- During teacher modeling and instruction
- During guided learning and practice
- During independent practice
Why?
- Represent Numbers Visually: Students place base-ten blocks, counters, or digits in the correct columns (e.g., hundreds, tens, ones)
- Build and Decompose Numbers: Students build numbers by placing manipulatives on the mat or break numbers apart (e.g., 346 = 300 + 40 + 6).
- Support Operations: Students use the mat to regroup or physically move pieces between columns.
- Strengthen Place Value Understanding: Students understand that the position of a digit affects its value
- Interactive Practice: Students engage with numbers in a multisensory activity
